P.J. Hall and Maurice Hurst wasted little time providing the inside pass rush that Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden wanted when he used two draft picks on the defensive tackles.Hall delivered on his first snap as a pro http://www.authenticsdetroitlions.com/cheap-t.j.-lang-jersey , bringing down Detroit's Matt Cassel in the exhibition opener. Hurst got pressure twice with one of those leading to Hall deflecting a pass by Cassel. That's an ingredient that has been sorely missing in Oakland for years and will go a long way toward upgrading a defense that hopes to be much improved in the first year under Gruden and coordinator Paul Guenther."I was pleased with it," Gruden said Monday. "I think it's an area that we've gone out to try to improve and we have a long way to go. But, there were some good signs."The Raiders drafted Hall in the second round after he recorded 42 sacks in his college career at FCS-level Sam Houston State. Oakland then was able to add another potential impact rusher in the fifth round when Hurst fell from a projected first-round pick because of a heart issue that led him to be sent home from the combine.Hurst was one of the most productive defensive players in the country last season at Michigan. He had 5陆 sacks as an interior rusher and led all nose tackles and defensive tackles with 49 total quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.Hurst has had no health issues since being drafted and delivered just what the Raiders expected."He's going to continue to get better," Gruden said. "I think going up against (Kelechi) Osemele and Gabe Jackson and (Rodney) Hudson all camp has made him better. It's made him stronger. It's made him play with better technique and leverage. He still has a ways to go but he and P.J. Hall both give us an element that we need here."The Raiders have the second-fewest sacks in the NFL the past two seasons with just 56 — one more than the last-place New York Jets. Nearly two-thirds of those sacks have come from Khalil Mack (21 1/2) and Bruce Irvin (15), as the edge players have gotten almost no help from the inside rushers.Oakland had just 1 1/2 sacks last year from players playing inside full-time, making the performance in the preseason opener so encouraging.Hall's sack came on the opening drive when Cassel was forced to step up in the pocket because of outside pressure by Irvin and Fadol Brown. Hall figures more of those opportunities will come, especially once Mack ends his holdout and rejoins the team."I definitely feel that will help a lot," he said. "He's a great edge rusher. He will make the quarterbacks step up in the pocket so I need to make sure I get a good interior rush."The interior rush is a key part of Guenther's defense. He had one of the best in the game at it during his time in Cincinnati when Geno Atkins anchored the Bengals defense.Hurst said he has tried to model his game after Atkins and embraces the challenge of trying to fill that role in Oakland."Definitely gets me amped up," he said. "The Bengals, their best player was their 3-technique, so that's the focal point of their defense and that's what Coach Guenther is used to getting. That's what he's got his whole time in the NFL. He drafted Geno, so I think it says something to him for drafting me and P.J. I think he definitely expects a lot from us and expects us to fill that role that he had while he was with the Bengals."NOTES: CB Gareon Conley returned to practice for the first time since injuring his hip on the first day of training camp. ... CB Daryl Worley left practice after colliding with teammate Rashaan Melvin.2019 NFL Draft Watch: 6 prospects to watch out for during Week 3 #5 Oklahoma at Iowa State on ABC at 12:00 p.m. ESTWe’ve got a few top teams slated at noon, but no top-tier matchups. Oklahoma has a few prospects that the Detroit Lions could target early.OklahomaWR Marquise Brown | 5-foot-10, 168 pounds (Junior)Brown has a slight frame and will need to add the extra weight to hang with the big boys on Sundays, but he is electric with the ball in his hands and could make for a good slot receiver at the next level. He’s had some problems with drops, which could be an issue when you have Matthew Stafford slinging bullets at you, but Brown is one of the better slot options to choose from http://www.authenticsdetroitlions.com/cheap-quandre-diggs-jersey , nonetheless.IOL Ben Powers | 6-foot-4, 313 pounds (Senior)No relation to Kenny.Powers thrives in pass protection with good hand placement and solid, consistent footwork. He’s been a reliable piece for the Sooners’ offensive line and that’s already a big help if you’re the Lions, who may be in the market for a T.J. Lang replacement next offseason. Look no further than Benny Powers. Yep, that’s gonna stick.Iowa StateRB David Montgomery | 5-foot-11, 216 pounds (Junior)Okay, well, the Lions probably won’t be drafting a running back early in next year’s draft, but you’re already watching this game anyway (or at least you should be), so might as well keep a close eye on Montgomery, who is a complete stud and a very fun back to watch.See for yourself.#12 LSU at #7 Auburn on CBS at 3:30 p.m. ESTLSUCB Greedy Williams | 6-foot-3, 184 pounds (RS Sophomore)I mean his name is Greedy Williams, what more do you want?Tall corners were a big thing that kind of died down, mostly because it’s nearly impossible to find both a tall cornerback and a good athlete. Williams is that rare breed who happens to be both. Williams has great feet and is able to stick to receivers like glue in man coverage and has the click-and-close ability to consistently make a play on the ball. He is a bit shy as a tackler and in run support, but I think you can work with that and he has some elite traits that you just don’t find in many prospects. Oh, and he’s pretty confident in himself, too.DL Rashard Lawrence | 6-foot-3, 317 pounds (Junior)The Lions need all the help they can get on the defensive line. I mean Color Rush Christian Jones Jersey , for the love of God, please do something, Bob.Lawrence is a solid player that will likely go somewhere in the early-to-mid-rounds if he declares. He is powerful and uses his hands extremely well to disengage early from blockers and causes opposing offenses fits. He is a nightmare when he gets a good jump off the snap and has one of the deadliest push-pull moves I’ve seen in a while. Lawrence could be a very nice addition to the Lions’ interior D-line, a unit that is still struggling to find any semblance of a pass rush, not to mention their struggles against the run. Lawrence could provide an immediate improvement in both areas.Auburn QB Jarrett Stidham | 6-foot-3, 215 pounds (RS Junior)Stidham isn’t a kid that’s going to jump right into the NFL and start. He comes from a program that generally doesn’t produce many NFL-ready quarterbacks, largely due to Gus Malzahn’s innovative, but non-QB friendly offensive scheme. Luckily, the Lions have Stafford locked up for a while, and they don’t really need a backup that can step in right away. What they do need is a QB with some actual skills, and Stidham is the first Auburn QB with some serious potential since, well, Cam Newton. Stidham is an accurate thrower with a decent arm and has the ability to not only throw the ball downfield (already an upgrade), but complete the ball down field. I know, it’s a new concept, but trust me, it’s possible.
