Madden 16 Launch Party scheduled in downtown Huntsville

If you're on the outside of videogame enthusiasm and familiarity, this should help you understand the scale of the "Madden" series: These NFL-based games have sold more than 100 million copies, which is roughly the same number of albums Prince, Fleetwood Mac and Britney Spears have each sold over their careers.

 

On Aug. 25, British Columbia-based company EA Sports will release "Madden 16." Huntsville-based company Curse, Inc. operates the popular "Madden" fan-site muthead.com and for the third year in a row is hosting a launch party for the newest version of the videogame. Curse's "Madden 16" Launch Party is set for 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. in Big Spring Park, located in downtown Huntsville, the same day as the game's release.

 

 

Curse's 2016 "Madden" Launch Party has gotten just a bit larger from last year's, when it was held at Bridge Street Town Centre nightspot Bar Louie. At the 2016 edition, Curse will have some players on-hand from the MUT community fans can challenge to win a copy of "Madden 16." A raffle will be held, with prizes ranging from gift baskets from local companies to signed jerseys to copies of "Madden 16" to T-shirts and even game consoles.

 

Nonprofit development organization Downtown Huntsville Inc. is among the launch party sponsors.

 

"The city is opening the entertainment district on a rare Tuesday night to facilitate this," DHI CEO Chad Emerson says of the event. This means attendees can purchase an alcoholic beverage from an entertainment district permitted restaurant or bar and carry it outdoors (in a special to-go cup) to consume within district boundaries. Big Spring Park is located within in the 136-acre Quigley entertainment district, in the heart of downtown. Entertainment district rules are typically in effect Thursday through Sunday evenings.

 

"Our goal is for Huntsville to have the largest 'Madden' release party in the country eventually," Emerson says.

 

The videogame series is named for John Madden, the gregarious former Super Bowl-winning Oakland Raiders coach who later transitioned into a colorful NFL broadcaster. "Madden" dates back to its 1988 debut as "John Madden Football" on now-archaic platforms like the Apple II and Commodore 64 computers.  "Madden 16" is being released for "now" platforms including Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

 

The revealing of the athlete to be featured on "Madden" covers has become an event onto itself. New York Giants Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was reveled as the fan-voted "Madden 16" cover athlete and on the  during a broadcast of ESPN's "SportsCenter" this spring. "Madden 16" will retail for around $60.
