"Helping The World DISCOVER THE WAY of LOVE!"
In the backyard of their two-storey villa is a swimming pool that is touches 8x15ft across. Most swimmers could never dream of swimming in such a confined space. But, that doesn't stop Joan Kratz from indulging in her favorite fitness activity - fitness swimming. "Well, that's the only size I can afford", shrugs Joan pragmatically. "Considering the advantages it has given me physically while allowing me to indulge in something I love, this is an investment worth every penny", she adds pointing to her small pool and the contraption sitting in it.

With wide open spaces and large swimming pools becoming a luxury few can afford, aquatic treadmills are soon becoming the equipment of choice for people who just want to swim their way to fitness and happiness. An aquatic treadmill is a device that can be attached to the side of the pool and to your body so you can swim steadily at the same place, deriving all the benefits of long distance swimming without requiring the same long spaces as a conventional pool. Thus the aquatic treadmill can turn even an oversized bathtub into a never ending swimming lane.

For many 'backyard swimmers', the aquatic treadmill is the only way to swim. "It has changed my life for the better", says 34 year old Penny Darrell, who was advised to lose weight but could not take up any other form of exercise because of her asthma problems. "I could not run or work out in a gym. My doctor warned me that I had to start working out or I'd soon have a coronary problem. Someone suggested swimming. But I don't have a large enough pool nearby. That's when I read something about swimming in position. After that, there was no turning back." Penny has a miniature indoor pool where she works out on her aquatic treadmill thrice a week for half an hour each.

Aquatic treadmills or swimming-in-place devices are becoming immensely popular with urban folks battling unhealthy lifestyles on the one hand and the lack of exercise options on the other. As fitness coach and trainer Brandon Craig says, "Where are the big pools? Not in your own back yard. For many people, the alternative of going to a nearby pool just does not exist. So, even if they have to shell out a few dollars, an easy contraption that gives them the same benefit as rigorous swimming pool minus the space and time constraint is a big hit."
