"Helping The World DISCOVER THE WAY of LOVE!"
Learning how to create SVG files for Cricut using your own Procreate drawings is now more accessible than ever. Through my own experiences with trial and error, I figured out how to convert my Procreate artwork into cut files for Cricut. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the process, helping you craft beautiful, personalized designs.
Procreate is a powerful digital art studio app designed for iPads and iPhones. It allows artists to create detailed paintings, drawings, and sketches, utilizing layers to manage complex artwork easily. It’s a favorite among artists for its versatility, ease of use, and ability to produce professional-level results.
As of now, the Procreate app is available in the App Store for $9.99, while the version for iPhones, called Procreate Pocket, costs $4.99. This one-time purchase gives you full access to an array of creative tools, making it a worthwhile investment for any digital artist.
To begin, open the Procreate app on your iPad or iPhone. Click on the Plus Sign to create a new canvas, and for this tutorial, I used the standard paper size of 11" x 8 ½".
For simplicity’s sake, I’ll demonstrate by drawing a simple, layered heart design. Start by selecting black as your color. To change the color, tap on the color button and select black. Then, choose a brush from the Brush Library. It’s important to select a smooth brush to ensure clean cuts in Cricut. My personal favorite is the “Syrup” brush, as it creates clean, sharp lines.
Now, draw your heart and drag the black color from the color button into the shape to fill it in. If any lines are out of place, you can use the eraser tool to refine your work.
In Procreate, each color or part of your design needs to be on a separate layer for easy conversion to SVG files. To create a new layer, click on the Layers Menu button, then tap the Plus Sign to add a new layer. Select a new color for this layer by tapping on the color button again. I chose purple for the second heart, which I drew inside the black heart.
Once you’ve drawn the purple heart, drag the color dot inside to fill it in. Follow this process again to create a third layer, where you can add a lighter shade of purple to create a highlight on top of the purple heart. Remember, you can always use the drag-and-drop feature to fill in the colors.
Finally, to prepare the image for Cricut, you need to remove the background. To do this, open the Layers Menu and uncheck the Background Color Box.
Once your drawing is complete, it’s time to export it as a PNG file, which is ideal for Cricut because it preserves the transparent background. Tap on the wrench icon, then select “Share.” Under the “Share Layers” option, choose PNG.
If your file size is small, you can email the image to yourself. For larger files, AirDrop is a faster option. After sending the images, open your email or AirDrop folder to access the layers of your heart design.
Now that your Procreate design is saved as individual PNG files, you’re ready to upload them to Cricut Design Space. Open Cricut Design Space on your computer and click on “New Project.” From there, select “Upload” and “Upload Image” to locate the layers of your heart design.
For each layer, click “Browse,” find the file, and select it. Choose “Simple Image” since the design is straightforward, and proceed without erasing anything. Next, click “Cut Image,” as you’ll only need the Cricut machine to cut your design.
Repeat this process for each layer until all three layers are uploaded.
Once all layers are uploaded, insert them into the project by selecting them and clicking “Insert Images.” For ease of use, assign different colors to each layer by selecting the layer and clicking on the Color Box.
To resize the hearts, start with the bottom layer, which is the black heart. Adjust its size, then resize the other layers to fit proportionally on top of the black heart. To ensure proper alignment, right-click on the black heart and select “Send to Back,” and move the highlight layer to the front.
To cut your design, place a sheet of black 8 ½" x 11" cardstock onto your Cricut mat and smooth it down. After loading the mat into the machine, set your Cricut dial to “Cardstock” and click “Make It” on your computer. Once everything is set, press “Go” on your Cricut machine, and it will start cutting out the first layer of your heart design.
Repeat the process for the remaining layers, switching out the cardstock colors for each layer if necessary.
After cutting all layers, remove them from the Cricut mat and assemble your design by aligning the pieces. Once everything is in place, your Procreate drawing is successfully transformed into a custom, layered SVG design for Cricut!
By following these steps, you’ll be able to create personalized SVG files for Cricut, adding a unique touch to your projects. With some practice, the process will become second nature, allowing you to bring any Procreate drawing to life through Cricut.
