I HAVE a confession to make. I got my tail between my legs, my arms raised in submission. I surrendered to my love of Birkenstocks and I never been happier.

For the uninitiated, Birkenstocks are the daggy German sandals usually worn by crustyheeled blokes schlepping to the weekly farmers markets. They made from contoured cork and rubber and mould to the shape of the wearer feet. Podiatrists love them. Fashionable folk have long hated them.
