Now we're ready to move ahead and start exploring what we can do in the shell and become comfortable with those basic concepts and actions.As we'll see, what we're going to learn really is truly basic; and having this basic knowledge can benefit you greatly.

The commands, actions and concepts we'll learn today will be simple to understand. They may even seem ridiculously simple. If they do, that's an excellent indication that you're beginning to master Linux!By learning just a few of the basics of Linux, you can dramatically increase the ease with which you can maintain, and even optimize, your website.Now, let's get to the Shell!Point Number 1: http://www.enriqueiglesias.com/profiles/blogs/legal-profit-system-r... More often than not, when you do connect to your Linux "shell account," you'll be presented with a text-based menu. Some providers will just drop you at a shell prompt and expect you to know what to do, but most will provide you with a menu so that you don't feel totally out of your element. This is where the fun begins! If you're already at a shell prompt, move ahead to point 3, otherwise please be sure to read point 2.

Tip: In order to maximize the information contained in this article, I won't be recreating the sample text-menu. Please refer to the "Getting Started" article if you're interested in seeing this, or are looking for clarification on some of the terms I'll be using below.If you don't end up at a shell prompt (e.g. /home/user/public_html or something similar), you'll want to get out of that text-based menuing system a.s.a.p. All of the points below will be executed at the shell prompt, and won't deal with whatever generic options your service provider might include in their text-based menu.Tip: In this article, we will assume that all commands entered will be followed by typing your return key, unless otherwise specified.Point Number 2: Escaping from a text-based menuing system is generally Legal Profit Review fairly simple. As I showed in my previous article's example, most text-based menus include one option to give you access to the shell. However, some providers do not include this option. Generally, it's not because they're afraid of what awesome damage you'll unleash (Believe me, they'll have plenty of safeguards in place to prevent you from doing anything much worse than destroying all of your own stuff). It's usually just because they don't/can't support users who have questions about the shell prompt or that they want you to feel as if you are only allowed to avail yourself of the options they present.
