Nonviolent resistance also switches the locus of respon- sibility for what happens to others

But nonviolence is more than just breaking the spiral; it changes the fifa 15 coins dynamics of social interaction. Nonviolent resistance is not just passive acceptance of the status quo. Rather, it shows an irrevocable commitment to a course of action and to change. Nonviolent action says, “No matter what you do to me, I will not hurt you; I will, however, continue to move to the new goal .” Nonviolent resistance also switches the locus of respon- sibility for what happens to others. Robinson was not to blame for any incidents. When Robinson was mistreated, it became the responsibility of the Dodger team to stand up for him. Finally, nonviolence (compared to violence) made it easier for the “enemy” to be converted to the cause (see Principle 7, below).

The value of nonviolent resistance can be seen in a study by Morton Deutsch. 26 In his study, an accomplice of the experimenter and a real subject played a two-person game that permitted altruistic, cooperative, individualistic, defensive, and aggressive behaviors. Subjects won vary- ing amounts of money by cooperating, attacking, or ignoring the other player. The results showed that when the accomplice played a nonviolent- resistance strategy (i.e., cooperate if the other player cooperated and play defensively when attacked) both players gained more money compared to other possible strategies (i.e., passivity, deterrence, et al.). Further, practicing nonviolent resistance resulted in the accomplice being per- ceived as fair and cooperative.

The value of Mr. Rickey’s nonviolent resistance can also be observed on the playing field. Perhaps the most dramatic event occurred late in the season on August 20 when the Dodgers were playing the fourth game of a series with the Cardinals. In the opening game, Joe Medwick had spiked Robinson’s left foot. Two games later, Robinson barely removed his leg in time to avoid an Enos Slaughter spike. In the top of the seventh of game four, Slaughter – a man known for his opposition to blacks in baseball – hit a grounder that was tossed to Robinson at first. Robinson took the throw with his foot on the inside of the bag. This time Slaughter’s spike came down hard on the back of Jackie’s leg, missing the Achilles tendon (and thus an injury that would likely have ended Robinson’s career) by an inch. The cut on Robinson’s leg was eight inches above the ankle–a location that made it hard to argue that it was an accidental spiking. Robinson’s Dodger teammates, lead by Hugh Casey, came out en masse to protest. Several Dodger players threatened the Cardinals with “dire consequences” if the attacks continued. Nonviolent resistance by Robinson had changed the social dynamics, preventing a spiral of violence and increasing the cohesion of the Dodger ball club.

For a long time, the principle of nonviolent resistance stirred not only Robinson’s teammates to action, but sportswriters, as well. Red Barber is of the opinion that Enos Slaughter’s entrance into the Hall of Fame was delayed by this spiking incident because many sportswriters (including himself ), knowing what he had done to Robinson, could not bring them- selves to cast a vote for Slaughter. (Slaughter, it may be noted, agrees with Barber’s assessment.)
