Today is Independence Day in the USA, but independence and self-determination aren't just American ideas. There's a slight gradient in the shade of the dial, too, akin to a fumé pattern. In 2021, watches with green dials are nothing new – everyone's getting in on the action – but I've never seen a dial fashioned after one of Africa's Seven Natural Wonders before. Like many watches from Oris, its strength comes from a unique blend of originality and altruism.These were all well intended and sometimes interesting, although this attendee would have had more senior industry types called to the stage for questioning, and fewer outsider observers, whose industry knowledge was frequently peripheral. A sustainability panel without Panerai’s Pontroué or Oris’s Studer, the latter of whom was on site and very visible, felt like a missed opportunity.
