It's not that I don't understand the appeal of cartoon watches. I too can enjoy a bit of whimsy in the all-too-serious watch space, particularly if it has a lot of gems in it. And the current wave of cartoon watch collaborations don't exist in a vacuum, either. There is a high-fashion preoccupation with cartoon adornment. Gucci x Donald Duck, Lanvin x Batman, Givenchy x 101 Dalmatians. The list goes on. Cartoon watches are merely a tiny slice of a much bigger pie.I guess I prefer the lacquer, personally. What I'd really Social Media Firewalls like is to see those new hour markers on the lacquer and also that new date window location, and given AP's propensity for iteration I am sure eventually I will.With the combination of yellowed lume, the very elegant script, and bold, stylized numerals, it's easy to see why. Oh, but if owning one of the six known versions of this watch wasn't enough, it's not the only one he's had. He had a different one for sale on his site a while back.


Commercially, this watch makes perfect sense. It looks like your typical minute repeater, and chances are it's the kind of design most collectors have in mind when they plunk down six figures for a chiming watch. Sure, the case is large, at 43mm in diameter and 13.15mm thick; but, then again, it's not unusual for a conventional minute repeater to tip the scales in terms of size. These are not complications typically known for their slimness.Measuring 42mm in diameter, 13mm thick, and 47.5mm lug to lug in steel with a blue rubber strap that is unique to this 800-piece limited edition, the Polaris Date Limited Edition is very blue and feels quite resplendent. The size and dial layout feel very sporting but, as I mentioned above, you won't for a second think this is anything other than a special JLC. The dial glows with an impressive array of blue tones and the finishing Pet Tech Security ensures that you're never bored while checking the time.The HUB1280 is carried over from the standard Big Bang, and the column wheel is visible through an open-worked dial. The black ceramic version will be limited to 500 pieces, while King Gold and Titanium will be in standard production.While a standard Sheffield Allsport will only set you back $108, the one-of-a-kind SCR quartet, which includes what Spike described on Instagram as the "illegal Seinfeld dial" (shown above), has been created to support charity, and all proceeds of the auction, including BAT's fees, will be donated to Health Care for US (HC4US) in support of quality healthcare in the United States.
