Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Linda Pilkington, the founder of the luxury perfume house, Ormonde Jayne, based in London. Although I had been receiving information from Ormonde Jayne for quite some time, I had never experienced their perfumes firsthand—until now. To my surprise, I discovered an entirely new world of fragrance that I had been missing.

Much like music, scents have an incredible ability to transport us back in time. Whether it's a nostalgic memory of childhood or a fleeting moment in adulthood, the power of fragrance is undeniable. Over the years, my taste in perfume has evolved, growing more refined as I’ve matured.

Early Memories of Scent: Nostalgia in the Air

Thinking back to the first scents that caught my attention, I remember the smell of freshly wet soil after a hot summer rain and the earthy scent of my grandmother’s bath oil. These fragrances were not just smells—they were experiences. Even the incense my father and his girlfriend burned, which signaled the rare weekends my sister and I spent with them, left a lasting impression. Each scent carried its own meaning and transported me to different times and places.

Later in life, a press trip to a gin distillery opened my eyes to the botanical world. I found myself more captivated by the array of aromatic botanicals than by the gin itself. This experience deepened my appreciation for the individual "notes" that make up a fragrance, helping me to understand what I loved and why certain scents resonated more than others.

A Journey into the Heart of Perfume

When I received an invitation to experience the “extraordinary flora of the Silk Route” through a Zoom interview with Linda Pilkington, I eagerly accepted. Although I missed out on sampling some of the Petit Fours of The Silk Road, I had already received samples from Ormonde Jayne’s Signature Collection. My favorite? Ormonde Woman—an unconventional and mysterious woody fragrance with Black Hemlock at its core. Its seductive and dusky aroma was like nothing I had smelled before.

During our Zoom interview, I learned more about Linda’s journey into the world of perfumery. Like me, she’s from Cheshire, specifically Altrincham, which made our conversation feel even more personal. Linda’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on, starting with an ice cream parlor in South America where she experimented with flavors—a precursor to her later explorations into scent.

Linda’s first major client was a friend who worked for Chanel and commissioned her to create a bespoke fragrance for one of the brand’s jewelry stores. From there, Ormonde Jayne was born, and today, her perfumes are available at prestigious stores such as Harrods, Selfridges, and Fortnum & Mason.

One of Linda’s most popular creations is Isfarkand, a fragrance initially made for her husband’s 30th birthday. The scent was so well-received that it became a permanent fixture in her boutique, known for its vibrant combination of pink pepper, cedar, and moss.
