Equestrian festival aims to raise equine awareness

Sunday was one of them, judging by the estimated 300 people who turned out for the San Diego County Equestrian Foundation's first Horse Expo and Fall Festival.Everything from a kid friendly petting zoo and pony rides to lively demonstrations of calf roping and classic horse disciplines were part of the horse happening at the 30 acre Hunter Equestrian Center in ."We just wanted to have a fun and educational day for horse owners and non horse owners alike," said Michell Anne Kimball, president of the foundation and owner of the equestrian center. "We wanted to give people a ranch experience they may never have had."Formed three months ago, the SDCEF is a group of more than 500 members of the local equestrian community who are "dedicated to developing equestrian friendly ordinances by working with the County of San Diego to update the county's General Plan," according to the group's mission statement."We are trying to raise the awareness of the community, and our goal is to work with the county to demonstrate the benefits of the rural environment and keep rural (land) protected," Kimball said. Although it took a few minutes for the twosome to establish who was boss, they managed to successfully wrangle the tiny horses into a dozen or so laps around the pen.Horses can be therapeutic.Four year old Sienna O'Day of Cardiff, who has Down syndrome, demonstrated that horseback riding could bring out the best in her. Riding since she was 2, a confident O'Day rode around the arena in various positions, all the while laughing, waving and blowing kisses to the crowd."Horses are used as a tool to help people of all ages and all kinds of disabling conditions. It's the horse's movement; it's rhythmic and it teaches balance," said Debbie Shinner, director of Reins Therapeutic Horsemanship Program in Fallbrook. "Because of the bonding with the animal, horses also have a very calming effect on people."
