"We knew that we'd be in a situation where everyone expects us to fail and do nothing.

Chile are heavy favourites in their World Cup opener against Australia but Socceroos forward Mathew Leckie feels the South Americans' style can be exploited.

The Socceroos open their Brazilian campaign against the world No.13 side in Cuiaba in Friday (Saturday AEST), with the South American side expected to employ a high defensive line.

Playing the game so far up-field can leave a side vulnerable to a quick counterattack and Leckie knows his pace on the wing could prove a real asset in coach Ange Postecoglou's plans.

"We expect Chile will play high Adidas Predator LZ TRX TF and, if we could play out from defence and get past their lines of midfield, we might be able to get in behind - that might suit us better," the Germany-based 23-year-old said.

"We knew that we'd be in a situation where everyone expects us to fail and do nothing.

"We want to do the best we can obviously, but we also want to try to play great football."

Australia go into the World Cup with renewed confidence after, Leckie says, proving they can match it with a top-20 side when they went down 1-0 to Croatia in their final warm-up clash.

"We lost 1-0 to Croatia but people probably expected us to lose by more and be outclassed," he said.

"As it turned out, the game was pretty even.

"I think it was pretty harsh to lose 1-0. A goalless Adidas Adipure 11Pro TRX FG draw would have been a fair result and we got a bit unlucky with a deflection for the goal."

Leckie was one of several Socceroos taking it easy at training on Sunday (Monday AEST), having pulled up slightly sore after a solid 85-minute showing against Croatia.

Postecoglou praised the defensive effort in the game but said the the attack lacked punch.

While he got forward often, Leckie accepts the final pass and lack of awareness of each other's movements let the team down.

"We did get in some positions up front, and he's probably right that when we did adidas f50 adizero messi get forward we didn't do much with it," he said.

"We have to get in some better positions as a front third. We need to know where to be when our midfielders have the ball."
