Where’s hockey practice when I need it?

We are social animals. The relationships you have fifa 15 coins with others are an important part of your life. Career hockey players who invest a great deal of their energy in their game usually rely on and benefit from nurturing, supportive off-ice relationships with their wives, girlfriends, parents, and friends. If you are fortunate enough to have a relationship with someone who supports you and is understanding of your needs, your moods, and your anxieties during the season, remember that the off-season is payback time, and that means it’s your turn to spend time and energy nurturing and supporting them.

I remember phoning one NHL player during the off-season when he was immersed in family responsibilities. When he answered the phone, it was clear he had his hands full. He was bathing his baby daughter and trying to persuade his four-year-old son not to do something. It wasn’t easy, and he knew it. He summed up his appreciation of the situation by laughing and saying, “Where’s hockey practice when I need it?”

Hockey players both young and old have had careers nurtured by a significant woman in their lives—a mother, wife, or girlfriend. I remember the wife of an NHL tough guy telling me that her husband demanded that she have his pregame meal prepared for him at exactly one o’clock. If his meal was late, he would get very upset and complain loudly. Although she tried her best to accommodate him, she was a busy housewife and mother with many things to do, and occasionally, inevitably, his pregame lunch would run late. When I asked her how she handled that, she smiled and said, “Real simple; I just turned the clock in the kitchen back to twelve-thirty.”

Eva, a veteran NHL wife, related that her husband frequently skipped out on household responsibilities during the season, claim- ing, “I’ve got to go to practice.” She figured out what was going on when, an hour after he had gone to work, she telephoned a friend, one of the other hockey wives, and discovered that her friend’s husband was still at home doing household chores and looking after the kids. Eva said, “I let him get away with it during the season, but in the off-season it’s a completely different story.”

Create supportive relationships that help you relax, prepare, and play the game. Appreciate what others do for you. Acknowl- edge their love and support. And remember, it’s payback in the off-season.
