Most importantly, they sense the mood of the audience in real time, interact and engage with the audience and responds with real-time improvisation and innovation. Sometimes, they play tracks that they have composed. However, they also inject some regular stuff, classics and contemporary hits or a mix of the three, to give the audience something they are familiar with. Actually, it depends on the mood and the situation and is often influenced by the duration of the party. It is the improvisation and the innovation that sets them apart from the regular radio DJs.

However, there are many who strongly oppose the DJ culture, for various reasons ranging from copyright issues and effect of loud music on the health of the audience. Today's generation favor DJs in equal proportion to the conventional singers and rock-stars and because of that, the conventional performers are having a tough time dealing with the unprecedented completion from the DJs. Celebrity status, hype, fan following, money - DJs are enjoying everything that was the in the territory of puritan musicians and singers.

Naturally, there is a clash of interest among the two poles, where the singers are claiming that DJs are unethically cutting into their earnings by performing in public gatherings by using the songs and music that are copyrighted. Also, many are of the opinion that this DJ culture is adversely affecting people's interest in the original musical instruments as a result of the encroachment of the digital sound mixers. Moreover, the loud music, excessive consumption of alcohol and sometimes fatal narcotics are taking a toll of the young generation's health - point of concern for many health authorities.

Whatever the case, the trend and the craze to hire DJ for parties and weddings are showing no sign of slowing down and will continue to grow at a brisk pace in the foreseeable future, unless something dramatic happens in the social and cultural landscape of the urban folks. Debates will continue and so will litigation, but it is for sure that DJs are here to stay for quite some time, come whatever may.
