"Helping The World DISCOVER THE WAY of LOVE!"

The A. Lange & Söhne Triple Split In Pink Gold With Blue Dial

I entered watchmaking for love. My girlfriend at the time, link who became my wife, was living in Switzerland, so I went there to be with her. And then I discovered a second passion. Watchmaking is something I fell in love with immediately. The competence takes a while coming from managerial school, which is very strong in fast consumer goods, because you have to learn that what moves luxury are not the same rules as what move business in general. In luxury it's all about emotions.A rattrapante chronograph, also known as a split-seconds complication, enables the timing of two separate intervals of elapsed time via a pair of central chronograph seconds hands that are mounted together. They start at the same time but can be stopped individually in order to track exact split time. The most commonly cited real-life benefit? Tracking lap time in a race. (A Reddit user once built a split-seconds complication out of Lego, if you need help visualizing the above.)And I get it. Painstaking effort goes into making a wristwatch, even one that is mass-produced. I can see how the folks who engineered the thing might be protective of it. They're trying to create a horological masterpiece and don't want anyone drawing a mustache on their Mona Lisa. But this mentality puts the watch industry out of step with the rest of the world, which is hurtling inexorably toward customization.I'm a big, big fan of this watch. Sure, green isn't usually my favorite color, and it's definitely not the obvious choice for this watch, but the execution here from top to bottom is outstanding. Montblanc has done a great job getting the details right, from the profile and finishes on the case to the subtle sunburst on the dial (which reminds me a bit of an old school guitar, in the best ways possible). To be able to get a steel chronograph of this quality at this price is a great thing indeed.

This week's selection of watches starts with two heavyweights, absolute grails for many collectors. One is a Rolex, a very rare kind of Explorer with a single line on the dial that changes everything. The other is an oversized Patek Philippe Calatrava with a double signature. You will also find some less high-profile watches, from a Superman LeJour (yes, that link is the actual name of this diver) to a great chronograph from Mathey Tissot. This is your Bring A Loupe for August 12, 2016.I love Seiko divers, and what Grand Seiko has done with the SBGH289 is take their tried-and-true formula from a model like the SKX007 and crank it up to 11. Yes, it's the value proposition that makes Seiko's divers attractive, but that does mean making some compromises. The Grand Seiko SBGH289 makes zero compromises. The green dial might be my second favorite of the bunch (nothing against the brown or the blue). I have a tropical dial in my collection, and the blue seems like a standard option compared to the others (and I'm sure it'll sell well because of that). But the beige dial feels all the more uncommon and appealing.

The Summit's crystal is curved and made of sapphire, something Montblanc is emphasizing as a connection to more traditional watchmaking. We're very used to tapping and swiping on flat glass, and sapphire tends to fingerprint pretty badly, so I was a little skeptical here. But, the curve is barely noticeable (I honestly think most people won't even realize). Fingerprints, on the other hand, are definitely an issue, though that's not unique to link this smartwatch by any means. There was a small window of opportunity. Winds like that didn't come often. The jet stream and all the nasty weather that can majorly impact regular flights exists in the troposphere, far below the altitude the Concorde soared at. Concorde flights were incredibly smooth for the most part. The only times atmospheric conditions could be felt were on take-off and landing. The Code 11.59 Chronograph is, however, an interesting watch. The Code collection is not easy. You have to spend a lot of time with the watches to start to get what AP was going for, and I'm not convinced even now that they succeeded unequivocally in connecting all the dots they wanted to connect. There's a 24-year gap between the Hustler and The Color of Money. Felson doesn't wear a Datejust in the original film, which means it's left to our imagination how his character landed such an iconic watch on his felt-resting wrists. My money is on him buying it after a big tournament victory. We all need one great watch, and this is his.
