It was an impressive update to the standard Black Bay, but some Fratello team members agreed that the burgundy version wasn't the one to go for. This year's new black version immediately showed why. The watch shakes the retro feel falsi orologi through the absence of gold details and beige lume. This great design decision makes this the perfect modern version of the vintage-inspired Black Bay.At 12.4mm thick, the Flagship Heritage is thicker than you'd like for a moonphase with elegant ambitions. On the wrist, it sits relatively tall and flat. This is also thanks to the caseback sitting lower than the lugs – place the Flagship Heritage on a table and only the caseback will rest on it, with the lugs floating slightly higher. This also occurs when the watch is on your wrist, meaning it doesn't have the curved, draping profile I prefer on dressier watches.Gorgeous dial aside, the SLGA009 sports a versatile diameter of 40mm on its Zaratsu polished case, and is powered by the brand's sophisticated 9RA2 Spring-Drive Automatic Caliber with a rugged power reserve of 120 hours.

The New York State people called and said, "How do we know we can read the clock from 100 feet away?" We have a huge printer, so we printed out a section of the clock at full scale, and the designer in my office – his name's Steven Worthington – hung it from his apartment window on the sixth or eighth floor of some building down in Chelsea. And then early one Sunday morning, he went out with a laser so he could get the exact distance.The cardinal markers of 12, three, and nine are done with large and luminous applied indices that are matched by the date aperture at six, which is framed by a tidy white metal border. The markings weigh nicely against the larger handset, and legibility is excellent, with a solid application of lume to help when your surroundings get dark.


It took me until 2018 to get my own Speedmaster. I was celebrating my 25th anniversary at work and decided that this moment had to be commemorated with a special watch. This past week, Hodinkee Insurance had the opportunity to delve into this fascinating universe during the exhibition "Time & Space: Watches from the Collection of Glen de billig tag heuer Uhr Vries" preview at Hindman Auctions.Each function is indicated by its own distinct ring – hours on the perimeter, minutes in the outer ring at eleven o'clock, and the constantly oscillating seconds at the ring at eight o'clock – and are pointedly marked with differing trefoil symbols. This one, like many other Trilobe creations, begs to be seen in motion. A picture does not do the poetry of its movement justice.
