This bespoke design is from a batch of six A-series pieces commissioned in the spring of 1973 by The Sultan of Oman, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. The dial is different from the regular production models. It is black with elegant diamond markers, as opposed to the standard blue/gray link Tapisserie dial. This lot carries an estimate of €147,000–295,000.And the first three minute markers on the chronograph’s minute recorder are also in orange.Turning this watch over, you can see that the back of the watch is even more compelling, with an additional view of the tourbillon as well as the governor for the minute repeater, which uses friction and centripetal force to regulate the speed at which the time is chimed.


These models are regularly discussed in the Fratello offices as two brilliant modern high-end sports watches.The Chronoliner B04 Boutique Edition will be available only in the 50 or so Breitling boutiques across the world, and it is limited to 100 pieces. It comes on the blue rubber strap pictured, with a 24mm lug width that balances the 46mm diameter. The caseback is described as sporting link a "vintage-look pin-up" but no renderings were provided and we're yet to see one of these in the metal.The '90s were the last great era of print media. Today, print advertising has taken a back seat to digital advertising, and that's alright. In regular time-keeping mode (with the crown fully screwed in), it's easy to check the power reserve and time-zone setting. A push of the upper pusher will make the little hand at 12 o'clock point to the gauge for the power reserve, indicating from 3 to 0. When the power reserve drops to 1 or 0, the hand will automatically show the battery level instead of the link day of the week.Legibility is outstanding, with the hands standing out against the dial and the combination of numerals and chapter ring allowing for precise reading. Though there is no lume on the dial, I found I could still read the watch in all but the darkest settings, since in most cases the white lacquer dial could be angled to reflect enough available light to give me a good sense of the time anyway.While the parts that comprise Tudor's current selection of in-house movements are manufactured offsite at a Tudor-owned facility several miles from the Geneva headquarters, a great many operations, including R&D, assembly, and quality control take place right in the heart of Geneva.
