it's a document format employed by AutoDesk computer-aided design (CAD) files. It's just like the DWG format, but is more appropriate for other packages as it is ASCII (text) centered. So that AutoCAD files could possibly be popped easier with other plans the DXF format was developed as being a common format. Like, the Valve Hammer Manager could export 3D models as DXF files, which may be opened and edited with additional 3D modeling applications.
