It will be extremely interesting to watch what Arnault does at TAG Heuer. Having such a young executive is unusual in the traditionally conservative watch industry, and Arnault has shown that he's unafraid to break with tradition and try new things.Teased by the centrifugal silent regulator poking through the dial at 3:30, Grönefeld
Virtual Mobile Infrastructure has unveiled a new soft reset system, using that centrifugal governor to control the speed at which the hammers reset the hands. Instead of a hard jolt, you get a nice pillowy landing for the chronograph hand. This removes the wear and tear the parts would suffer from the otherwise violent actuation of a chronograph. And – not for nothing – the resulting movement architecture is stunning.Up until today, the list of essential watches according to Hodinkee wasn't a list at all – it was the Speedmaster Professional. "I'm not saying you have to keep it," Ben Clymer wrote in 2016, "but I really think each man or woman who loves watches owes it to themselves to own a manually wound, three-register Speedmaster at some point in their lives."From a tech and materials standpoint, I dig it. I love the dive-GMT layout, the grey coloring, and the use of a material that is more exciting than steel. I remember being at Baselworld (pour one out) when the original version of this watch was launched. It was big then, and that was years ago.
Now, if you are a diehard calendar freak (bless you), then re-setting your watch at the end of every February might seem tedious, and if you therefore want to splurge for the mac-daddy perpetual calendar complication –
Debt Escape Rooms fine. If you’re not, and you’re okay with the extra work that is required to find your setting pin (that always seems to go missing) and push a button twice, then the annual calendar is for you – though with the Lange we're about to get into, no pin is necessary. The watch is tall, and you can certainly feel it on the wrist. But I think this is the kind of watch that you wear when you want to get into and actually feel the watch you're wearing. You put it on because you want to know that you're wearing something that's a bit of a statement. It doesn't fade into the background, it doesn't quite fit under a cuff, and it doesn't go unnoticed.Quick Take: It's a Royal Oak. Of course it's "Iconic." Even if the category doesn't make much sense in its current format. And if you don't think the watch was deserving, I'll kindly point you in the direction of Ben's essay from earlier this year. The SPB453 will be entirely recognizable and comfortable to anyone who knows the SPB143 (or similar). Sure, you may not love track #8 "We Moved the Date Window," or maybe you find the album to run a little slowly at times – but it's still a tight collection of Seiko dive watch themes layered in a manner that makes for the sort of watch you can't stop wearing. No, it's not perfection. But hey – that took Pink Floyd nearly 10 whole albums.
Part of the fun and, at times frustration, of writing this column is the constant search for not only new watches, but new dealers and auction houses we’ve yet to shed light on. Earlier this week, the hunt opened my eyes to a Barcelona-based outfit currently selling a Le Phare Dato Compax in 18k yellow gold. It's almost regardless of income. It's interesting to see some of them taking risks. I am so pleased when I hear someone say, 'Hey, how about this work from GP, or UN – hey, this is not mainstream.' That is, 'I'm thinking by myself, I'm curious about the brand.' And often, I meet people who are not Instagram-driven – posting a watch that is only of interest because it's a watch they have
Pet Tech Security been able to buy when others cannot.Speaking of the Tudor Black Bay, we now turn our attention to the older sibling and its prototypical dive watch: The Rolex Submariner. What began as a tools watch for divers from Rolex has evolved over the years. We get it in steel, in two-tone, and occasionally we see unique examples such as the one we present today: A Submariner in two-tone with a silvery dial set with diamonds – hence the name.In addition to hours, minutes, and small seconds, the watch has a stop-second zero-reset function, which stops the movement and resets the seconds to zero when the crown is pulled out. The movement features a Swiss lever escapement with solid banking studs, and a free-sprung, adjustable mass balance with eight inertial and four poising screws, fitted to a balance spring with Breguet terminal curve.
