While much has been said about French business since, little of it has been reported through the lens of the French watch industry. The Summit Smartwatch uses Montblanc's sporty, vintage-inspired 1858 collection as a jumping off point. The case is 46mm across and 12.5mm thick. It very much looks and feels like a Montblanc watch, despite the fact that there's no physical dial or hands to speak of. It certainly wears big, as you'd expect from those specs, but it's relatively lightweight, since there's not a hefty replique jaeger lecoultre montres mechanical movement inside and the construction is either steel or titanium.Having rehashed that, let's now focus on an example that came up for sale earlier this week in Sotheby's morning sale; the watch dates back to 1942. Although it's not untouched, this is an honest example of what an ultra scarce and desirably configured chronograph looks like. This 33 mm piece is powered by the Cal. 13VZAH, which is effectively a Valjoux dressed up to the ninest of nines, if you will, and is adorned with a single Roman numeral marker on the gold tone dial side.One of the more surprising aspects is the construction of the screw-down crown. When you unthread the crown on the IWC Top Gun SFTI, there is a distinct ratcheting sound, almost akin to the sound of winding the watch itself. This sound stops once the crown is unthreaded to let you know it is in a position to be set. The 60-meter water resistance of the Top Gun SFTI coupled with the screw-down element makes this watch more than appropriate for swimming, as well.Opposite those two anecdotes, sales are very much happening at IWJG. I approached a booth from Hong Kong only to find two bins of watches sitting atop the seller's case, blocking my view of just about anything he was offering. I was instructed to come back in about an hour, he had to write up an invoice for the dozens of Rolex and Cartier some other buyer had struck a deal for.
