Interestingly, the movement being used to power this watch is the P.900, a thin, three-day automatic with date that we have previously seen in the company's Luminor Due nep khaite range. It's interesting because those watches were made to be thin, to be worn under a shirtsleeve in more formal settings. At more than 14mm thick, this Submerible isn't thin by any stretch, but that hasn't prevented it from taking advantage of this new 4.2mm-thin automatic movement.Today we're examining 14 modern hand-winding watches in the collection that use Panerai's own movements. Since 2018, Panerai hasn't had to use movements from ETA. Panerai watches began as Rolex-manufactured pieces and progressed to become a brand that relied on sourced movements. But now it's able to meet its movement-making needs with its own range of calibers. For a brand that started with watches made by Rolex, Panerai's integrated manufacture is a major achievement.Quality is of course relative. While, at a macro level, we struggle to decide on what makes a "great" movement, or how to define excellent finishing, comparing a single component of a watch against what peers were creating in the same era is more straightforward. Clearly, I find vintage Movado watches to be of exceptional quality, but allow me to prove it to you piece by piece, component by component.
