Cleveland firefighters have one more mission for vintage first fire truck

Firefighters in Cleveland have launched an appeal to raise thousands of dollars to try to restore the station's first ever fire truck.

Cheap Nike Free Run The 1939 Ford fire truck has been sitting in a hangar at Cleveland's training field station since before the current crews can remember.

"It's a part of the history of this town," said Fire Chief Brian McNevin, who joined the Cleveland team in April. "We're going to fix her up and get her as much back to her former glory as we can."

Nike Free Run 3 One donor has already pledged $1,000 to get them going. If they are successful, the plan is to put the engine on permanent display for Cleveland's population to enjoy.

"We're going to bring this truck home," said McNevin, who has done this once before with a 1938 fire truck at the Canton (Texas) Fire Department.

A vintage photo shows the Cleveland truck and its volunteer crew standing outside the city's old fire station. At the time, it was state of the art, cost about $2,000, and was capable of pumping 500 gallons of water per minute.

Today's fire engines pump three times that and can cost upwards of $1 million, according to McNevin. Cleveland's current 2010 "basic pumper" cost around $300,000.

Nike Free Run There's nothing basic about the basic pumper, though. Where the 1939 truck merely pumped water, the 2010 truck does much, much more.

"Back in 1939 all we did was fight fire, now we carry hydraulic rescue equipment for cutting people out of cars, Hazmat protection equipment, EMS gear . the fire service is so diversified now," said McNevin.

Almost every high end truck in the area was used back in September when Cleveland FD fought it's biggest ever fire. 59 near Fostoria.

Back in 1939, a fire like that would've been totally uncontrollable, McNevin said.

"With the old trucks, we wouldn't have been able to do nothing, no chance, not a one of them," he said.

The situations crews face now are also more dangerous, so with the general progress of technology has come the need for better protection.

"Everything now is toxic, plastics, foams, everything in your house is poisonous when it burns, we never go anywhere without air packs now," McNevin said.

Despite the changes, McNevin said it's important to remember where everything started, which is why he's so determined to restore the old truck.

Nike Free Run 2 Mens The old photo shows just eight firefighters standing in front of the old truck. Cleveland now has a crew of 22 volunteers and 15 paid staff. McNevin said those original few ensured the success of his team now.

"Someone had to start it, and it takes a group of people with a passion to do that and you should never forget that," he said. "The things that we had then and the people that were there, they got us to where we are now."

Anyone interested in donating to the cause can do so at the Cleveland Fire Station 2 on Boothe St. or Cleveland City Hall. For more information, call McNevin at 903 366 3515.
