Function of Circuit breaker and fuses

Circuit breakers and fuses are electrical devices that prevent power overloads, short circuits, ground faults, and arc faults. They disconnect the current when these situations occur. Unlike a fuse that works only once, circuit breakers are designed to work over and over again. This is because they can be manually turned on and off to perform switching functions.

Uniform function of circuit breaker

It is a device that detects excessive electricity and interrupts the flow of current by "tripping". The means by which a circuit breaker operates vary, but every breaker performs a uniform function. Other components in a breaker include a protective relay that triggers the operating mechanism once an electrical fault occurs. The operating mechanism opens and shuts the breaker to fulfil its protection role, as well as an auxiliary contact that prevents the tripping of the main contacts.

The auxiliary contact also acts as an overcurrent sensor and sends an indicator light to indicate that the breakers are tripped or overloaded. Some types of breaker have an additional safety feature called a residual-current device (RCD) or a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). These detect imbalances of current and are used in conjunction with fuse type devices to protect against ground leakage. Molded Breakers chambers

A molded circuit breaker (MCCB) installs contacts, arc extinguishing chambers, and trip units into an insulated case that can be mounted in motor control centres, switchboards, or panel boards. They have high current ratings and are often used in commercial power systems. They protect against overcurrent and short circuits by interrupting current.

They can also provide protection against line faults, ground faults, and motor overloads. A moulded breaker can be manually or electrically operated. They can have either electromechanical or electronic overcurrent trippers, but the majority use thermal magnetic trip units.

If a breaker is tripped and the handle is left in the on position, it will continue to break current until the operating mechanism opens and closes the contact. A moulded breaker is typically equipped with quick-make, quick-break contacts that snap open and closed at different speeds depending on the speed of the handle movement. It can also be prevented from tripping by holding the handle in the on position during a fault condition. This feature makes them very reliable. Vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) are a type of circuit breaker that uses vacuum interrupters instead of gases like SF6 to interrupt currents. VCB are commonly used in medium voltage applications in transmission networks, high-voltage power stations, and substations because of their superior interruption capabilities and long operating life. vacuum circuit breaker

The arc interruption takes place in a steel arc chamber that is placed in the centre of symmetrically arranged ceramic insulators. The vacuum pressure within the arc chamber is maintained below 10-4 torr. The performance of the arc interruption depends on the material used for the current-carrying contacts, such as copper-bismuth or copper-chrome.

When the current-carrying metal contacts are pulled apart, they ionize the air in between them to form an electric arc. The arc is then interrupted by the vacuum that is created in between the metal contact surfaces. When the contacts are pulled together again, the arc is extinguished by the metal vapours that emerge from the gap area.

The arc interruption process makes vacuum circuit breakers more efficient and less bulky than other types of fuses. They also offer higher interruption ratings than other fuses and don’t need periodic refilling. As a result, they are more cost-effective than other devices that perform the same functions. Moreover, they are more reliable and less expensive to operate than gas circuit breakers.

Air Circuit Breakers conditions

Air circuit breakers are used in power stations and industrial plants. They protect equipment from overflows of current caused by four dangerous conditions: overload, short circuit, ground fault and arc fault. Unlike fuses, they are designed to interrupt current flow when these conditions occur.


The arc effect is observed when heavy current passes through the non-conductive path developed between two separating metal contacts inside an air circuit breaker. The arc generates visible light and provides a path for the heavy current to flow through. The arc is extinguished when the contact surfaces cool down to temperatures that no longer support electrical conductivity. This causes the metals to disintegrate and is replaced by a non-conductive vapor.

Different dielectric materials like oil or gases are used to extinguish the arc in circuit breakers. For air circuit breakers, atmospheric air is the primary choice due to its low cost and high arc quenching efficiency. circuit breaker for sale at surplusrecord.

During the operating sequence of an air circuit breaker, the main contacts are closed and open within a time period called the standard duty cycle. The auxiliary or arcing contacts are closed before & opened after the main contacts of an air circuit breaker. The auxiliary contacts are designed with copper and silver plates that have low resistance and conduct the current in a closed position. These contacts are also heat resistant and can be easily changed if damaged.
