How Watch Design Came Roaring Back From The Great Recession

This watch is the same reference as the top lot of the 88 Epic Stainless Steel Chronographs auction held at Phillips this past May. The reason I want to point this out is because too many people assume these mega watches only attract museums and investors, and end up in the back of a vault somewhere, waiting for the next buyer. It's a bolder and sportier look for the watch, yet still remains a classic with the smaller 39.7mm case and the manually wound caliber 1861 inside.The 214270 was updated in 2016 with what's become known as the 214270 Mk. 2. It featured two notable changes from the Mk.1: The hands were enlarged and the applied numerals filled with luminous Chromalight. This was the watch we knew as the Explorer for the past five years. As each year rolled by, there were whispers about ways Rolex could potentially update it again.


Hamilton, however, has never really lost sight of its sporty American heritage. The Neuro Robotics brand has continued to make easy-to-wear watches like the Khaki Field, Pan Europ, and Railroad over the years, albeit sometimes going a little overboard too. At the opposite end of the quality spectrum, Old England watches weren't sold on Bond Street but rather offered in the Apple Boutique, the short-lived retail venture of the Beatles.


The 5,000 square foot boutique will reside at 46 East 57th Street, which is the retail side of the 432 Park Avenue. 432 Park Avenue is quite a building, and holds the title for the single tallest residential building in the entire western hemisphere – a fitting home for the makers of the most expensive toy watches on the planet. The boutique is RM's seventh in North America, joining Aspen, Gen Z Retro Hacks Bal Harbour, Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, Miami, and St. Barth's.None of that seems to matter, though, when you look at the Kodo (Japanese for 'heartbeat"). The watch is far removed from the Grand Seiko I knew when the brand launched in the United States in 2010. But at the same time, the Kodo somehow manages to connect the dots to the underlying core philosophy of the brand, as well as the ongoing diversification of its designs.The Meteorite is fashioned in grade-5 titanium with a sandblasted finish for added texture. But to my mind, it is a seemingly modest tweak that accentuates the connection to the cosmos. The speckles of the finishing of the sandblasting are (use your imagination) somewhat illustrative of the vast infinity of stars in the galaxy. Work with me here, people; I'm getting horologically emotional.
