Lewis Hamilton leaves two F1 rivals worried after Max Verstappen’s confident comments | F1 | sports

Lewis Hamilton has claimed Max Verstappen will “do no wrong” in his bid to become a three-time F1 champion in a blow to Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc. Aston Martin and Ferrari were Red Bull’s closest rivals in Bahrain and will be the most likely to capitalize on any mistakes from Verstappen.

Mercedes struggled in Sakhir and fell behind the constructors in overall pace. However, Hamilton appears to be ruling out any challenge for Red Bull in 2023.

He explained, “I think he’s going to be very confident with confidence. I think they developed an amazing car last year, they blew all the records in just about everything and I don’t think they were pushing at the end and still ahead.”

“I don’t think he’s going to miss. He’s the world champion and so I’m not going to question his determination or his focus. I think he’ll always be just as focused, and it’s our job to catch up.”

The Dutchman scored 15 wins last season to clinch the title while his consistency helped him out in 2021. Verstappen finished first and second on 18 occasions during his title battle with Hamilton giving him the edge.

Ferrari went into the new campaign confident they could finally challenge Red Bull after a year of promise in 2022. However, the Scuderia seemed unable to match the lap times of Verstappen and Sergio Perez and looked set to settle for P3.

But, Leclerc failed to make it to the end of the race as the runaway horse’s reliability issues re-occurred. After the race, he demanded that an investigation be opened in the cases in an attempt to solve the problem before Saudi Arabia.

He said: “We had a good gap at the back, I was running the pace, everything was good, so it’s a shame. Now I just hope we can look into it, understand what went wrong and not have that problem anymore.”

Analysis at Maranello concluded that the problem was caused by broken wiring due to improper installation and chassis. The team is also more likely to run away without penalty after discovering that one of the two consoles does not need replacement.

Despite outpacing their closest competitors, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner refused to walk away. He commented, “We don’t take anything for granted.

“Let’s see Jeddah in two weeks, and Melbourne after that. I think once we have two or three circuits under our belt we will get a much better picture of the strengths and weaknesses of our car and our competition.”
