This is your Bring A Loupe for July 28, 2017.I snapped a couple of photos and sent an email to a man named Al Jenskey of Archer Watches, asking if he might be interested in restoring my father’s Gruen to proper wearable condition. I had met Al at my first ever Timezone get-together in Toronto and he was something of a legend among those looking to restore seriously unloved watches, so I was delighted when he agreed to a relatively straightforward overhaul of the graduation Gruen.It's a great watch. It's comfortable, practical, and does everything I could want. The dial is captivating and I enjoy it every time I look at it. But, to me, it doesn't represent any sort of singular success. It encapsulates 40 years of life, of hard work, and of growth in ways that I could never have imagined back in my days as a combination fry cook/dishwasher constantly getting burned by the deep fryer.


The other two watches also use a new movement, which is the Spring Drive caliber 9R31. This caliber is similar in replika Panerai broad strokes to the 9R02, however, instead of the 9R02's complex bridgework, there is a full-plate architecture. The Torque Return System is omitted in the 9R31, which has a lower power reserve than 9R02 – a still-respectable 72 hours. Finishing it off, the DB25sQP comes with both a blue alligator strap (with a polished titanium pin buckle) and an additional grey fabric strap.In due time my Cartier test-drive concluded and I was left with my utilitarian hand-wound Luch. We were then joined by my Omega Deville, which, though not as expensive as the Cartier, was also ladylike, and polite to the point of near invisibility.

The big deal here: It has a new movement that is tested to plus or minus one second per day with the fine-tuning tolerance of plus or minus 0.1 seconds per day.
