The white opaline seconds sub-dial and chronograph minutes counter on a black dial sticks to a tried fake jaeger lecoultre watch and true monochromatic formula that not only looks svelte, but has proven reliable and supremely legible over decades. Just look at any dashboard or cockpit.While certainly similar to the previous WAY2XX reference, these new Aquaracers look a lot less fussy. The dial has been simplified with new markers and less text, the hands are less complicated, and the date has been moved to six o'clock and is capped by a cyclops mounted inside the crystal. Likewise, the bezel design has been refined, with a more elegant font for the insert and jimping along the profile for better grip.The Solar collection, to the contrary, provides a vastly more wearable proposition – and a vastly more accurate movement, to boot. The model we have here is the most visually similar to a certain vintage '69 era Speedtimer with blue dial and Pepsi bezel. While this new model is not a Pepsi per se, it spreads the blue and red motif around to create a watch that is entirely modern in form, with a few retro flourishes here and there to cement its connection to the older timepiece.This feels like the correct balance of old meets new in a way that is more vibrant and eye-catching for someone like myself who loves the idea of Speedmasters but isn't deep in the weeds trying to buy a perfect replica of a relatively esoteric (to the general consumer) vintage reference. It will catch the eye of a lot of new buyers while still giving something to the fans who care deeply about the Speedmaster.
