And though this is not your great-grandfather's vintage, hand-wound chronograph from an august Geneva manufacture – assuming you were lucky enough to have a great-grandfather disposed to such things – it is a modern and quite serviceable automatic chronograph that uses a modified version of the ETA Valjoux 7750 Social Robotics that includes a column wheel in lieu of the standard cam-and-lever system, as well as, of course, a flyback function.This year, people will continue to realize there's serious, complicated watchmaking to be had for the same price as a 5711 on the secondary market – hell, you can still get complicated Pateks for that price (give me a 3940 or 3970J, or even 5170, any day of the week) before we even get to the true "values" in complicated watches. There's still a lot of room for appreciation of complicated watches to grow across vintage, neo-vintage, and modern watches.I'm going to boldly claim that we are in the age of nostalgia marketing. There's the near constant attempt by companies (watch-related or otherwise) to incite warm and fuzzy feelings of longing for that now-forgotten time before pocket-sized technology claimed our attention spans and the potential for mass production directly informed much of design. The years-long trend of vintage-revival watches, in my humble opinion, serves as direct evidence of the nostalgia marketing phenomenon.
