Here's a proposal for how the National Vince Wilfork Kids Jersey Football League (NFL) could do business differently. Instead of naming each team after the city they play in, they could give each team a number, and require that all teams wear generic "home" and "away" jerseys. Names could be removed from the backs of the jerseys and players could be identified by number only. This would cut costs. The team owners, having no distinctive marketing advantage of their own, would have far less negotiating power and could be replaced easily. This would give the franchise more control, and allow the NFL to keep more of the money. Finally, the teams would have to pay the players less, and the players wouldn't have such big egos. The teams could just recruit average players and pay them moderate salaries. Then they players would be expendable. Players could be shuffled and allocated to give each team a relatively equal level of skill. There's only one problem with this approach: the games would be boring and nobody would watch them. These employees become lazy, they complain to each other in the cafeteria, and they put out the minimum amount of effort needed to avoid getting fired. Recessions hit, and employers realize that they can't afford people who don't pull their own weight. Layoffs happen. The economy picks back up, and the cycle of mediocrity starts all over again.
