Not to be outdone, 2013 saw the introduction of a perpetual calendar chronograph in titanium with a beautiful, unique dial. Read more here. The case metal of this example is, of course, the highlight but the red seconds hands steals the show. The specially made checkered dial is complemented by a matching pattern strap with red enamel stitching. At the time of the sale of this watch, many commented on how this was the "coolest and most sporting" strap ever seen on a Patek Philippe.Fans were over the moon – and in another galaxy – over this release. But you can't please 'em all. And soon after, complaints began that 42mm was just too large. If only it were 38mm!! Hamilton released a teaser campaign video on Instagram last week with a voiceover reading what appears to be a fan letter
replica Hublot expressing that exact sentiment. There are a few other rare versions of the Milspec 1: Victor pointed me to the "Demolition Watch," named for how it was advertised in 1970s Abercrombie & Fitch catalogs ("maybe a dozen," he says), while Golden mentioned the "AM" Milspecs 1s as a favorite, notable because of a curious and unexplainable, but perhaps military-related "AM" engraving on the caseback. But now we're getting into extremely nerdy territory.
To put it in terms that the average layman (or lay-Patek-nerd) would understand, what they've done here is combine the calibers found in the 5990 and the 5130 to create what is actually the world's smallest and thinnest world-timer chronograph, period. While all three watches were made in precious metals as well, it's really the use of steel cases and integrated steel bracelets that makes them stand out from their predecessors – that, and the use of designs which were unlike anything else seen before in luxury watchmaking. The ceramic bezel is the other big change to the look. There's now a surrounding ring in the same metal as the case; the ceramic doesn't stretch to the edge of the bezel itself. It's a practical
replika Rolex measure – ceramic's great and durable, unless you happen to knock a bezel edge pretty hard and shatter the whole thing.Similarly, I'm now fascinated by the career of James Ferguson, a Scottish astronomer who published a volume of collected lectures in 1825 (title page, image 8). Is the math accurate on his calculation showing "the mean time of any New or Full Moon, or Eclipse, from the creation of the world to the year of Christ 5800"? Has anyone ever tried to build his surreal-looking "universal dial" (image 9) which shows the time on different parts of the globe by the use of shadows only?
By now you should already be aware that 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Cartier Tank. As far as horological milestones go, it doesn't get much bigger than this. Though earlier this year Cartier was focused on the re-release of the Panthère, it's now Tank time. Today we saw the unveiling of four new anniversary collections that range from the basic to the extravagant. The Tank Cintrée Skeleton is most certainly the latter.Funnily enough, this isn't AP's first connection to Guy Laliberté. The Cirque du Soleil founder was one of the earliest space tourists when he ventured into orbit in 2011 and he chose a pretty mind-boggling watch for the journey. On his wrist was a black PVD coated Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Grande Complication – check our our original story about the watch right here. To say it's a pretty badass choice for leaving Earth would be
repliky Zenith a colossal understatement. The dial construction is one major difference between old and new. According to Omega, the dial is comprised of two plates. The first plate is applied with a blue-emitting Super-LumiNova, while the top plate has cut-outs for the indexes and numerals. This is effectively a sandwich-style dial, but it doesn't end there. The markers are recessed and filled with a healthy dose of luminous material as well. The "open Arabic" numerals have been used before by Omega, on the Seamaster 300 in the 1960s.
