I would like to round off my list of the best watches of 2024 with one that typifies
link the stylistic transition we are in better than any other. The Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02 exemplifies the shift toward shaped and dressier watches we see all across the market. What bothers me is that it is at the cost of the true collectors and enthusiasts who are unable to purchase the watch they want to wear. But as Jan Mayen is a protected nature reserve, visiting the island and taking samples is not that simple.
Since its initial release, I had the pleasure of reviewing both the inaugural model and the stone-dial versions
link earlier this year.Of course, this watch is reportedly one of six made with a shiny pink gold dial.Back in the early '80s, the Freestyle brand was all about making a watch fit for extreme sports – namely surfing. In fact, the Shark was specifically designed to be the first purpose-built surf watch. The brand's two So-Cal founders wanted a watch capable of handling the abuses To be clear, thTo be clear, the Shark isn't some statement of fine watchmaking or timekeeping. For one thing, it's digital, and for another it's cheap – like $60 cheap (it would take 166 of these to make one Submariner). Much like the sport it's meant to support, it gives off a certain carefree air – and a wavy attitude. Which, as a young man growing up in Maryland, was the vibe I was going for.
However, due to the drilled lug holes, another tremendous vintage nod, swapping between a strap and a bracelet is not an issue. This wraparound fuses perfectly with the case and ensures the piece is ever-so comfortable to wear. While much of the brand's recent success has hinged upon new-vintage treatments of their original Sub 300 design from 1967, the brand branched out, or rather forward (in time), last August when they announced the Sub 600T Pacific, a titanium limited edition dive watch made in partnership with the Australian watch blog Time + Tide. In covering this creation, I closed my story with a wish that Doxa might make this general design part of their
link standard collection. As you can see from the photos, the PR516 looks well-proportioned from above, but when viewed from the side the thickness does become noticeable. But a thick chronograph isn't a Tissot-specific problem – look at offerings from brands priced 2x, 3x, or even 4x higher, and you'll often see similar dimensions.
