Add to those the heft of this Canopus Gold Speedmaster, and you will surely never forget a
link watch like this. The watch goes all-in on the screaming yellow theme with a sunray dial.Cancellara wasn't always a Tudor man, but he was always destined to be a watch collector, starting with a Portugieser he received as an anniversary gift from his wife. He would spend much of his later career wearing other IWCs — Aquatimers and Big Pilots, even racing with them on-wrist. When pressed on why one would wear a mechanical watch while cycling, he replied with a shrug "Because it's cool."
Not sure if you exclusively want to buy a new watch, but otherwise there's the possibility to acquire a pre-owned Sea-Dweller as
link well. Rolex ruined the current Sea-Dweller with one, but former models had no cyclops. No cyclops, but with a date. And looking at one you realize how functional the cyclops is. Magnifying 2.5x does the job.As you'll tell by his pickAdditionally, the finish did seem to pick up small scratches and markings fairly easily.Nevertheless, I think it’s commercially clever to have this one rated to 100 meters.
But it has been recently serviced with still much of the Doxa charm intact, and is an excellent way to start my list of orange beasts.OnTheDash is the vintage-Heuer site belonging to one Jeff Stein, a collector and expert whose name is well known to HODINKEE readers and the vintage Heuer community (he even writes for us from time to time). That site's Instagram is a wonderful glimpse into the world of vintage Heuer as curated by one of the category's foremost experts. And while we're on the topic of OnTheDash, it had a recent site redesign. If you haven't checked it out in a while, head on over.Follow @on_the_dashThe architecture is really lovely and the movement
link not only suits the size of the case quite nicely but it's also finished with a mix of frosted and polished elements and presented with almost nothing in the way of text to detract from the view. I get that some folks reading this won't be open to this watch and its niche specificity, but it's hard to look at that movement and feel as though Leica phoned in the whole watchmaking part of, you know, making a watch. What struck me most about this watch, from a purely visual perspective, was the dial. Seiko has really been upping its game in that department, of late (I think back to the Ginza cobblestone street Alpinist from last year). This one has a black dial that, from afar, looks like your standard-fare black dial. Look closer – or really get this thing under direct sunlight – and you'll see a pronounced grain pattern similar to the material of the track itself. On the nose? Maybe, but no less cool.
