MMOs are free-to-play

MMO games (Massively Multiplayer Online games, or MMOs for short) allow gamers to connect and compete against thousands of other gamers simultaneously in persistent, large worlds that require online connectivity and can push server technology and networking infrastructure to its limits. They often influence gamer culture as well as foster communities around the globe - an influence which has its origins in text-based multi-user dungeons (MUDs) dating back to university mainframe computer adventures that predated commercial gaming industry expansion.

MMOGs are usually played on PCs, video game consoles or smartphones and mobile devices. Some MMOGs are free-to-play with microtransactions while others require subscription. There may be a wide variety of game types and features in a MMOG such as character progression to social interaction to PvP battles to virtual economies where players can trade in-game currency for real money - a popular example being Second Life from Linden Labs that emphasizes socializing and worldbuilding while offering players an in-world virtual economy built on user content sale/purchase transactions and virtual economies for player created content creators/buyers alike.

They are multi-player

MMOs enable multiple players to interact within a persistent virtual world. Most MMOs require high-speed Internet access for play, providing an immersive gameplay experience that transcends single player video games.

The original multi-user role-playing games (MMORPGs) can be traced back to university mainframe text-based multi-user dungeons and adventure games played before commercial gaming was commercialised. These early MMORPGs allowed players to cooperate on cooperative quests within one game world with other players within that MMORPG - eventually popular graphical titles such as EverQuest, World of Warcraft and EVE Online emerged.

Other MMOs include puzzle games like Puzzle Pirates and Alteil, MMO Collectible Card Games such as Neopets and Star Wars Galaxies, and strategy titles like Castle Infinity and Steve Jackson Games' UltraCorps. Fans looking for online games for PC often enjoy diverse genres, from puzzles and card games to large-scale strategy and empire-building adventures. These games allow players to build and control large empires through turn-based warfare on an ongoing schedule, usually once per day, using a gameplay system commonly known as ticking.

They are casual

MMO games allow players to interact in a shared virtual world, typically played on either a personal computer or video game console. Most MMOs feature large player bases and persistent worlds that can be accessed at any time; furthermore, most MMOs require Internet connectivity in order to play.

EverQuest and Final Fantasy XIV are classic MMOs that boast vast worlds, story content and social interactivity; EVE Online provides player-driven economy and politics. Meanwhile, action or strategy-focused MMOs such as Steve Jackson Games' UltraCorps and Darkwind: War on Wheels feature "tick" schedules where orders are submitted simultaneously with battle resolution at exactly the same moment in time.

Other MMOs feature simulation, like World of Tanks, Motor City Online and iRacing. Many of these titles employ virtual economies and regular updates; others provide socialization features, like Linden Lab's Second Life.

They are virtual

MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online Worlds) are virtual worlds in which many players interact with one another to compete or cooperate on a large scale, from role-playing games to combat simulators and social interaction and community. MMOs provide an ideal venue for networking and finding business opportunities - news agency Reuters even set up their virtual office in Second Life while companies like Sun Microsystems hosted press events there!

MMO gamers often form guilds, which can have surprising real-world ramifications. A guild in an MMORPG can influence how its members act; moreover, guilds may move across different MMOs creating an interlinked metagame experience.

Gaming trends have contributed to an explosion of interest for MMOs among the public. Futurists who study technological trends predict that MMOs will play an increasingly crucial role in society; critics argue they can become addictive and have harmful impacts in real life.
