Why EC-Council ECIH Should Be Your First Certification, Not CEH

If you’re looking to create a career path in cybersecurity using the EC-Council, then there are two particular EC-Council certifications which you will encounter quite quickly in your career: the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification, and the EC-Council Certified Incident Handler (ECIH) certification. Both certifications are valuable to employers, but only one really makes sense for a beginner’s career choice.

What Each Certification Actually Covers

CEH is based on offensive principles such as network scanning, exploitation of vulnerabilities, and system testing from an attacker's perspective. CEH is a recognized brand, yet it's a more focused specialization that focuses on penetration testing and red team activities, which constitute only a fraction of the general security industry.

ECIH is built around defense, specifically, what happens when something goes wrong. This includes all aspects of the incident response life cycle: preparation, detection, containment, eradication, and recovery. This is a skill set that can be utilized in almost any security position beyond just incident response teams.

Why ECIH is the stronger first move for most people

  • Broader job market. SOC analyst and incident response roles are far more common entry points into cybersecurity than pentesting roles, and postings for these roles increasingly list ECIH as a preferred credential, especially as ransomware and breach incidents continue rising across industries.
  • Skills that transfer everywhere. Understanding how incidents are detected and contained gives you a working knowledge of how attacks actually play out in real environments. Knowledge that's useful even if you eventually move toward offensive security later.
  • Faster path to a paycheck. The ECIH certification path typically leads toward roles like Incident Response Analyst, SOC Lead, or Threat Intelligence Specialist, with progression from analyst to team lead often happening within three to five years. In the US, professionals holding the credential report salaries roughly in the 85,000–130,000 range, while UK-based professionals often start around £55,000 and move well above £80,000 at senior levels, solid numbers for a first certification.
  • Lower barrier to entry. ECIH assumes less prior offensive-security background than CEH, making it more approachable if you're coming from a helpdesk, sysadmin, or general IT role rather than a hands-on hacking background.

Some professionals do go on to earn CEH later, once they have incident response fundamentals in place and want to specialize further into offensive testing. But starting there first often means learning attack techniques before you understand how organizations actually detect and respond to them, backwards for most career paths.

ECIH Practice Questions: See What the EC-Council 212-89 Exam Actually Asks

Reading about the incident-handling lifecycle is one thing; seeing how it's actually tested is another. Before you commit your study time, it helps to preview the kind of questions you'll face. The ECIH 212-89 exam questions from CertBoosters mirror the same incident-handling domains covered on the real test, giving you a realistic sense of the exam's depth and confirming this is a manageable, worthwhile first step.

Make ECIH Your Starting Point

In case you find yourself trying to decide between the two, then ECIH provides the more well-rounded base of knowledge, the easier way to enter the field, and access to a larger percentage of the job market. There is definitely room for CEH, although it should be a specialty to follow up on later. For most people starting out, ECIH is the more practical place to begin.
