I busied myself speaking to colleagues about the link ultimate 'Normcore' watches (Speedmaster and Explorer 1, if anyone cares to know my verdict), but, rather predictably, the yellow-gold-hungry glamour demon inside me yearned for opulence. As much as I love a 1016, stainless steel isn't my version link of a luxury fantasy. So, I returned to joy and maximalism, picking link up a watch that I had let fall by the wayside during a period of aesthetic malaise.

That's what makes the new Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition an interesting release. Even without the '50s backstory, it's a damn good watch. It doesn't use link history as a g chok crutch to push the watch and it doesn't use modernity as an excuse to cut corners when re-interpreting the design. This watch is, in theory, as close to the original 1953 model as Breitling could get while still ladies oyster perpetual rolex producing a commercially viable reference.
