"Helping The World DISCOVER THE WAY of LOVE!"
Hi all. I inherited property in Calaveras County and I am trying to decide whether to keep it or sell. I live several hours away and only get up there a few times a year, which means I am always reacting to things after the fact. Insurance, county assessments, road access, fire risk designations, all of it seems to change without me hearing about it. Is there a practical way to stay informed about a county you do not live in without driving up constantly? The property is about ten acres with a small structure on it, nothing that generates income as it stands.

Remote ownership is mostly an information problem, and you can solve a good chunk of it from home. Three things I would set up: county assessor and planning notices, your insurance carrier's communications, and a general county news feed so you catch board decisions and fire designation changes early. I use the Calaveras page on CA Today https://catoday.news/calaveras-county , for that last part. Also worth having someone local who will pick up the phone, a neighbor or a caretaker, because no feed tells you a tree came down on your access road. Honest note: on the sell or keep question, insurance availability in those foothill counties is the variable that ends up deciding it for most people.
