black coaches

Question: Who was the last African American coach to land a head coaching job in the league?

(The answer is at the end of the article).

With the Super Bowl over, we recently witnessed another round of coaching shuffles, firings and hirings. Once again, there were the usual suspects as well as some disappointments.

One of the biggest surprises came when Baltimore Ravens Defensive Coordinator, Marvin Lewis, got passed up for each of the seven coaching positions.

Yes, the world is unfair, and smart and accomplished coaches with impressive track records do not always get the job. Hey, it's a question of demand and supply. But the majority at least get interviewed, no? Well, in the non celebrity world, we all know that people get interviews through connections and networking, although most usually land jobs based on their accomplishments and work ethic.

It's not that different in professional sports, where people's track records are public knowledge; you would therefore assume that this self correcting phenomenon would ensure that the best coaches get the jobs. Right? Think again.

Let's revisit the Marvin Lewis situation. Apparently, Lewis designed, orchestrated and ran what many have called the best defense of all Nike Air Max 2016 Nike Air Max 2016 time, up there with the 1985 Bears. The fact that they gave up the least amount of points in Nike Air Max Womens history is proof of this.

So why is it that Lewis only got 1, count 'em 1, interview (with the Buffalo Bills), even though 8 jobs were available?the race card?I admit that many talented African American coaches get passed on for "recycled" Caucasian coaches, so let's examine some points to consider to see whether race is the issue.

1. The New York Jets' hiring of Herman Edwards marks the first hiring of an African American coach in over 42 vacancies since Tony Dungy was hired by Tampa Bay in 1996.

2. Several other African American coaches are getting assistant and coordinator positions, but few are landing the top job.

3. Marvin Lewis, the defensive genius that assembled what is perhaps the best defense of all time in the NFL, received only 1 interview out of a potential 8 teams. Now, why would teams who are doing miserably not give him a shot, especially in light of the fact that he led his defense to the lowest points ever allowed, and followed it up with a Super Bowl Championship?
