Photo by Darryl Oumi/Hawaii Media SourceHONOLULU Finding its focus despite the distractions of a tropical paradise and a pending Presidential visit, the Iowa State men's basketball team fought off scrappy George Mason, 79 67, Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.Georges Niang scored a game high 22 points, Dustin Hogue added 17 points and nine rebounds, Melvin Ejim collected 14 points and a season high 11 boards, and Deandre Kane contributed 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as the No. 17 ranked Cyclones improved to 9 0 the second best start in school history. The 1996 97 team started at 10 0. Akron beat Oregon State 83 71.George Mason fell to 5 5.The Iowa State players and coaches visited Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach in addition to normal pregame preparation Friday and Saturday, then went through a 25 minute security search after arriving at the Stan Sheriff Center for its game on Sunday. President Barack Obama and his family are vacationing on O'ahu and attended the Oregon State Akron game immediately following Iowa State George Mason."It was pretty crazy, I never had to take 25 minutes to get into a game before," said Niang, who had his third straight 20 point outing. "But it's for (Obama), so I understand the principle."Of greater concern in the first half was George Mason's patient offense and effective zone defense, which held the Cyclones to 40.6 percent shooting (13 of 32), including 21.4 percent (3 of 14) from 3 point range. The Patriots matched Iowa State basket for basket through the first 15 minutes, and led 25 24 after Johnny Williams' jump hook with 5 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the half. Kane then tied it with a free throw, and the Cyclones took the lead for good on King's 3 pointer with 3:59 left. They eventually stretched it to 34 27 on Hogue's fast break layup with 1:46 showing, and took a 34 29 lead into the break."I thought (the Patriots) did a good job slowing us down with their zone, although we had some good looks that just didn't drop," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We had two and a half days of activities, and it might have taken us a little while to find our legs. In the second half we just had to get the ball moving better to shift their zone, and if we hit some outside shots that would loosen up the middle for Georges."The Cyclones opened the second half with a 10 3 run started by Hogue's alley oop layup and capped by Kane's slam dunk to make it 44 32 with 15:42 remaining in the game. George Mason closed it to 45 39 about a minute later on Jalen Jenkins' driving layup, but Iowa State pushed it back to 50 39 after a 3 pointer by Naz Long and Kane's layup with 13:05 left. The Patriots stayed within striking distance and closed it to 56 51 on Bryon Allen's jumper from the left wing with 6:16 remaining, but the Cyclones answered with a 12 2 run capped by Niang's 3 pointer to make it 68 53 with 2:39 left.George Mason could not get closer than 11 points the rest of the way."We had to play at the speed that we wanted to play at not at their speed and I think that's what busted it open," Hogue said. "We had to run our transition offense and not bring up the ball so slow."Patrick Holloway led the Patriots with 19 points including 5 for 9 shooting from 3 point range and Allen added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.Comments may be monitored for inappropriate content but the newspaper is under no obligation to do so.
