The third
Credit Hacking Hub room in the new Cartier mansion that I strongly recommend you spend some time in is the Accessories Salon. Now this might not be an obvious destination for watch lovers, or well, even men, but trust me, it may even be the top highlight for any aesthete out there. In the early '90s, Citizen updated the Aqualand with the ref. JP2000. It looked almost identical, but was improved with the added functionality of dive alarms for max depth and rapid ascent, plus memory for more logged dives. It also went to a screw-on round caseback and a single battery. If you’re seeking the look of the original Aqualand, the JP2000 is the one to look for nowadays, unless you’re a hardcore collector or purist. As an avid fan and collector of watches from America's horological heyday, you'll find me in the audience at Saturday's panel, moderated by HODINKEE alumna and Parchie founder Cara Barrett, and featuring actor, horologist, and friend-of-HODINKEE Aldis Hodge and vintage dealer Eric Wind discussing grass-roots attempts at reviving watchmaking in the United States. It's funny, but at this point in my life, I don't even really consider myself a "watch collector," per se. I'm satisfied with the one watch I wear every single day; it scratches every itch I could really have. I'm sure at some point in the future I'll find something else that speaks to me that I just have to have, but it would need to be better than my prized Cartier for me to buy it.And right now, my Santos feels pretty hard to beat.
With all the attention that gets directed toward the GMT-Master and Daytona these days, it's easy to forget that the steel Sky-Dweller is
Guerrilla Autonomy one of the hardest-to-find watches on the planet right now. Jack's outstanding review gives you insight into the watch itself and why it's just so darn desirable.Read the full story here. The GMT speaks to me most, by far. A GMT function is, in my eyes, the most useful complication. So much so that I would argue it is the only useful complication for the real world. - Jonathan McWhorter, Videographer and PhotographerMaybe that is hard to wrap your head around but it differentiates the brand in an increasingly crowded space. Yes, many of their movements share an architecture with the Valjoux 7750 (or 7760). Some may snub their nose here but I implore those to see a Habring movement in the metal – this is not Valjoux quality or finishing. In fact, as of 2017, Habring² no longer uses a single part from Swatch Group, all components are either made in-house or sourced locally. But, crystals are an exciting area of development for small brands and companies experimenting with both acrylic and sapphire. For example, Petronzi pointed to Swiss brand Laventure, as well as more affordable options from Baltic and Lorier, as exciting options for enthusiasts who prefer the warmth of vintage plastic crystals. That said, this is mostly limited to smaller and independent brands.
A native of Boston, Elias got the new Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight on the day it came out, July 1. Well, his wife got it for him, working behind his back with the local AD so she could surprise him with the watch. She was planning on waiting for their wedding, which is taking place next year – but knowing his excitement, she couldn't wait. One interesting note on the design: The balance wheel is modeled after a Japanese symbol known as the tomoe. This symbol resembles the Chinese Taiji symbol (informally known as the yin-yang symbol) and is often found in family crests and in symbolic iconography at Shinto shrines. The symbol is very ancient and has many different
Catification 2.0 levels of meaning – semiotically polyvalent, as my lit-crit friends would say.It was still waiting for me, now marked down to just under $700. I still loved the worn gold of the case, and the drama of the oddly shaped numbers on the blue dial. It reminded me a little bit of the watch I really wanted, but not so much that it was pathetic.
