This week
Eco Viral Challenges is dedicated to tool watches – those engineered to fulfill particular purposes under specific, often difficult circumstances. The Patek Amagnetic Reference 3417 demonstrates that such watches do not need to be bulky and rough-looking to deliver results. Also expect to find an aviation chronograph from Jardur, a dive watch from Zenith, and a controversial military Lemania. This is your Bring A Loupe for August 5, 2016.Johnny’s verdict turned out to be right. Digital watches did not replace watches with hands, Mickey’s or otherwise. By the end of 1977, Hamilton had not only stopped producing Pulsars but had sold the Pulsar name.As noted earlier, Strange opens his watch drawer just prior to heading off to a fancy NYC Gala. After perusing through his rather large watch collection, each with its own individual winding slot, the fully tuxedoed Strange pulls the JLC out from the drawer. He then proceeds to hold the watch in his hand – you know, to show it off to the camera. As he does [00:10:34], we get a clear view of the dial and all its complicated glory on his bespoke wrists. Each of the colorways is limited to 400 units, and assuming you can get your hands on any of the four, they are retailing for $1460. Colors span Aquamarine blue, Carnelian red, Citrine yellow, and Emerald green.
These early 6204s were powered by the Rolex caliber A260, which was repurposed from earlier Oyster Perpetual models, including a number of later bubblebacks. It was the most robust automatic movement Rolex had at the time, with
Viral Tech Challenges built in shock protection, making it the right fit for the fledgeling Submariner. All of these factors – including the oh-so-comfortable Oyster bracelet (even the polished center links have grown on me over the years) – reminded me why I couldn't let this watch go despite the dollar signs in my eyes. The hat's perfectly ugly and perfectly designed at the same time. It was a way to remind myself where I came from when I was in New York. During the pandemic, Kirkland found his way back, moving home to St. Louis.
The Polo has continued to be a part of Piaget's collection, but with little fanfare. Today, that changes. Say hello to the Piaget Polo S (the S stands for steel, the style
Viral Food Science of the watch, and that it is a signature of the brand). The new and improved version of the Polo is different in many ways, all while maintaining the same sporty elegance that was so loved in the first version. We haven’t had a chance to look at this watch in person, and really all we have to go on in this case are Kyle’s supplied images and the story he tells. But from the looks of it, he’s a very lucky flea-market shopper who now has a killer watch and one hell of a story to go with it.Audemars Piguet has slowly rectified its early missteps. I can't remember the last time it brought a new three-hander Code 11.59 reference to market, while AP has continually experimented with new complications and new formats for existing complicated models. Just look at the big news I reported on earlier this week – AP released three different Code 11.59 models that are, in my opinion, some of the best-looking examples yet.We all know that months and years vary in length, adding complication to any calendar. Standard perpetual calendars account for leap years and the length of individual months. This would be fine if a year were 365.25 days (requiring adjustment every 4 years). But in reality, a year is 365.2425 days, meaning years ending in 100, 200, and 300 aren't leap years, while years divisible evenly by 400 are leap years. That means standard perpetual calendars will require adjustment once every 100 years.
